Message From the Dean

Welcome to the Monterey Institute, a truly exciting language learning and teaching environment. In a single walk across campus, you will hear people laughing and chatting in a multitude of languages.  Native and non-native speakers alike, all have interests in international careers and have chosen the Monterey Institute for the educational and interpersonal opportunities it affords them as they pursue their global futures.
At the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics, we have two main missions: we prepare outstanding teachers of English as a Second Language and Teachers of Foreign Languages, and we provide exciting, stimulating language classes to graduate students in all the disciplines, including business, policy studies, trade and education. Our ESL and foreign language classes include both skills classes (writing, conversation, public speaking) and content classes such as European Union (in French), Twentieth Century China (in Chinese), Personalities in Russian Politics (in Russian), Topics in Teaching Arabic (in Arabic), and Policy & Politics in Contemporary Mexico (in Spanish).

These classes, in conjunction with the outstanding language programs at the Institute, provide exciting opportunities for master's students preparing to be leaders in the field of teaching, curriculum design, assessment, language program administration and computer-assisted language learning. You will be challenged and stimulated by both your classmates and your professors, while simultaneously making new friends and colleagues that you will value for the rest of your life.
I encourage you to call or email our faculty with any questions you might have. Better yet, come and visit our classes to sample the unique flavor of the Monterey Institute. I look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,
Renee Jourdenais, Dean
