Russian

Welcome to the Monterey Institute's Summer Intensive Russian Program! Over the course of 8 weeks, the program offers 180 hours of intensive elementary and intermediate level language and culture instruction giving students an opportunity to jump-start their Russian studies or take them to an advanced level of study.

In addition to intensive in-class instruction that includes communicative grammar activities, current events discussions, cultural presentations, etc. and is lead by native or near-native Russian speakers with extensive experience in teaching, the program also gives students access to teaching assistants providing tutoring and additional opportunities for language practice. The program also sets up language and culture oriented activities such as Russian Tea get-togethers, movie nights, or a trip to the Russian community in San Francisco to even further immerse students in their target language and culture.

Course Descriptions

Elementary Russian
The elementary class is designed for students with no or minimal knowledge of Russian. The elementary level emphasizes survival skills and extensively covers basic grammar that must be mastered in order to function in a Russian environment. Instruction also includes a variety of activities ranging from role-plays based on given scenarios, individual and group presentations as well as the reading of authentic Russian texts. Students are able  to work with audio and video materials to develop listening skills as well as grammar sessions that include conversational practice. During the summer session, classes are 5 hours a day, Monday through Friday.  Students in the elementary Russian program should expect to spend an additional 2-4 hours per day outside class to complete homework assignments and prepare for the next day's class.

Intermediate Russian
The intermediate class is designed for students with at least one year of recent college-level Russian studies. Students are required to take a placement exam at the start of the program. Placement is determined by students' language proficiency level, not the length of their previous studies.

The intermediate class uses a content-based, communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. Students study a particular subject matter such as Russian politics, social, social and environmental issues as well as history while developing conversational, listening, reading, writing and analytical skills. The 5 hours of in-class instruction is composed of various types of activities ranging from individual and group presentations, group discussions and reading of authentic Russian texts. Grammar sessions include conversational practice, and students will also work with audio and video materials (e.g. interviews with Russian native speakers, relevant excerpts from Russian films, Russian TV news, etc.) in order to develop listening skills.  Students in the intermediate Russian program should expect to spend an additional 2-4 hours per day outside class to complete homework assignments and prepare for the next days' class. During the summer session, classes are5 hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Textbooks Overview

This year, the required Russian text books need to be ordered before you arrive in Monterey for your program.

This is because all the texts are the most up to date Russian teaching resources and ordered directly from Russia and available only through the source listed below. Four books are listed for the elementary section, and 3 books are listed for the intermediate section. They are all required texts for the program, but the individual cost of them is reasonable. If you are unsure of your level, please use your score from the diagonistic test on the website as a guide. Or, you may want to order text books for both levels and send one set back after the session begins.
