Grading Policy

1) SILP consists of three 60-hour sessions. At the end of each session, a comprehensive exam will be given and grades will be determined. (Session end-dates are July 2, July 21, and August 6).
2) Incomplete grades are not granted in the SILP program.
3) If a student would like to take SILP on a pass/no pass basis, he/she must complete a pass/no pass form and turn it in to the Records Office by the last day of each session (see session end-dates above).                                 4) The last to offically drop a course is the 4th day of each session (6/20, 7/9 and 7/25). After these dates, if a student has not officially dropped the course and wishes to receive a "W" grade, he/she must submit a withdrawal petition at the Records Office before the last day of each session or receive a grade.
5) In all course work applying towards degrees at MIIS, students are required to maintain an overall 3.00 (B) grade point average.

Transcripts cannot be sent if the student, or former student, has outstanding debts with the Monterey Institute; this includes student accounts, student loans, library fines and materials, or any charges assessed by any other department.

Note: to students continuing in a the Monterey Institute degree program: with the exception of Arabic 200-level courses, SILP language courses at the 100 and 200 levels do not count toward the Monterey Institute degrees, neither as language nor elective units. Your grades for such lower division work will appear on a separate transcript page and will not be included in the calculation for your graduate GPA at the Monterey Institute.

Attendance Policy

1) Below 80% attendance (2.5 days per session) will result in an F (Fail) grade.
2) Each day, or partial day, missed without pre-approval will result in a grade reduction (1/3 grade for partial-day absences and 1/2 grade for full-day absences)
3) Arrival to class more than 60 minutes late constitutes a partial absence.
4) Three late arrivals of 20 minutes or more constitutes a partial absence.
5) In the case of absence due to an emergency or sudden illness, a doctor’s note is required. All other excuses will be reviewed by SILP Administration on a case-by-case basis.
