Arabic

Welcome to the Monterey Institute's Winter Intensive Arabic Program! Over the course of 15 days, the program offers 60 hours of intensive elementary and intermediate level language and culture instruction giving you an opportunity to jump-start your Arabic studies or advance to a high-intermediate level of study.

Courses

Course Descriptions
 

Elementary Arabic

In the lowest level of Elementary Arabic (no knowledge of Modern Arabic), students will be introduced to the sounds and scripts of the Arabic Language. Students will be exposed to authentic reading and listening material and learn how to speak at the survival level. Students will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases which will serve as a stroung foundation for further study. Alif-Baa is the textbook for this level of Elementary Arabic.The course is, as the name suggests, very intensive, and students are expected to spend an additional 2 - 4 hours on homework outside of class. During the winter session, classes are 4 hours and 15 minutes a day, from 9:00AM until 11:45AM, resuming after lunch from 1:00PM until 2:30PM.The program comprises a total of 60 hours equaling 4 semester units of undergraduate credit.

In the mid and high-level Elementary Arabic classes (WITH knowledge of Arabic letters and sounds but very limited experience in the language), students will be exposed to authentic reading materials, learn to speak at the survival level, give oral presentations, and prepare short written assignments. The course will use Al-Kitaab Part One as its major textbook. Supplementary authentic materials from newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and television are provided to enhance both reading and listening skills. This course is, as the name suggests, very intensive, and students are expected to spend an additional 2-4 hours on homework outside of class. During the winter session, classes are 4 hours and 15 minutes a day, from 9:00AM until 11:45AM, resuming after lunch fro 1:00Pm until 2:30PM. The program comprises a total of 60 hours equaling 4 semester units of undergraduate credit. Students are required to take a placement test at the start of the program. Placement is determined by students' language proficiency level, not the length of their previous studies.

Intermediate Arabic

The intermediate class is designed for students with at least one year of Arabic studies and a clear understanding of all the material covered in the first half of  Al-Kitaab Part One  textbook. Students are required to take a placement test at the start of the program. Placement is determined by students' language proficiency level, not the length of their previous studies.

The class uses a communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. Students engage in interactive and functional activities such as dialogues, role plays, and presentations to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing. Instruction is designed to improve students' overall ability to understand and use the language accurately and appropriately. The second half of Al-Kitaab Part One will be used for the Intermediate level class. The text is supplemented with DVDs and authentic materials from newspapers, magazines, the Internet and television for reading and listening practice. The learning in class is, as the name suggests, very intensive, and students are expected to spend an additional 2-4 hours outside the class to acquire and understand the grammar, nuances, and thinking process behind the language. During the winter session, classes are 4 hours and 15 minutes a day, from 9:00AM until 11:45AM, resuming after lunch from 1:00PM until 2:30PM.The program comprises a total of 60 hours, equaling 4 semester units of under-graduate credit.

Textbooks

We highly recommend that you order your texts online through the vendor of your choice before the WILP session begins. The session is very short, and if you wait to purchase your books until the session begins, they may not arrive in time. If you are unsure of your level, please use your score from the diagnostic test as a guide. Or, you may want to purchase both books and send one back after the session begins.
