Welcome to the Monterey Institute's Winter Intensive Japanese Program! Over the course of 15 instructional days, the program offers 60 hours of intensive elementary and intermediate level language and culture instruction giving you an opportunity to jump-start your Japanese studies or advance to a high-intermediate level of study.
Instruction in the program is led by native or near-native Japanese speakers with extensive experience in teaching, providing students with many opportunities to practice the language. If you have further questions about the program, please contact wilp@miis.edu or 831-647-4115.
Elementary Japanese
The elementary class is designed for students with no or minimal knowledge of Japanese. The class uses a communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. In conjunction with the texts and associated audio material, students will be exposed to authentic readings and listening, will participate in didactic games and engage in functional and communicative activities such as role plays, skits, and presentations. The texts were carefully chosen to not only expose students to the language, but also provide them with a thorough understanding of the culture in Japan. All the writing system in Japanese, Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji will be introduced and practiced. Students in the elementary Japanese program should expect to spend an additional 2 - 4 hours per day outside class to complete homework assignments and prepare for the next day's class. During the winter session, classes are 4 hours and 15 minutes a day with appropriate beraks in between classes. The program offers a total of 60 hours of instruction, equaling 4 units of under-graduate credit.
Intermediate Japanese
The intermediate class is designed for students with at least one year of recent college-level Japanese studies. Students are required to take a placement exam in all four skills at the start of the program. Placement is determined by students' language proficiency level, not the length of their previous studies.

We higly recommend that you order your texts online through the vendor of your choice before the WILP sesson begins. The session is very short, and if you wait to purchase your books until the session begins, they may not arrive in time. If you are unsure of your level, please use your score from the diagonistic test as a guide. Or, you may want to purchase both books and send one back after the session.
