Spanish

Welcome to the Monterey Institute's Winter Intensive Spanish Program! Over the course of 15 days, the program offers 60 hours of intensive elementary and intermediate level language and culture instruction giving you an opportunity to jump-start your Spanish studies or advance to a high-intermediate level of study.

Courses

Instruction in the program is led by native or near-native Spanish speakers with extensive experience in teaching, providing students with many opportunities to practice the language. If you have further questions about the program, please contact wilp@miis.edu or 831-647-4115.

Course Descriptions

Elementary Spanish

The elementary class is designed for students with no or minimal knowledge of Spanish. The class uses a communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. In conjunction with the texts and associated audio material, students will be exposed to authentic readings and listening, will participate in didactic games and engage in functional and communicative activities such as role plays, dialogues, and presentations. The texts were carefully chosen to not only expose students to the language, but also provide them with a thorough understanding of the culture in Spanish speaking countries around the world. The Panorama text is used as the major medium of instruction. Students in the elementary Spanish program should expect to spend an additional 2-4 hours per day outside class to complete homework assignments and prepare for the next day's class. During the winter session, classes are 4 hours and 15 minutes each day, from 9:00AM until 11:45AM, and resuming after lunch from 1:00PM until 2:30PM.The program comprises a total of 60 hours of instruction, equaling 4 semester units of undergraduate credit.

Intermediate Spanish

The intermediate class is designed for students with at least one year of recent college-level Spanish studies. Students are required to take a placement exam in all four skills at the start of the program. Placement is determined by students' language proficiency level, not the length of their previous studies.

The intermediate class uses a communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. The course is designed to feature current events and topics related to students' interests. To achieve this goal, authentic readings from Spanish newspapers and magizines as well as audio visual material from films and television are used. Oral and written skills are taught from authentic materials and a content-based "Fluency Component" is incorporated to provide contextualized fluency practice and vocabulary development. Grammatical structures are highlighted daily during the "Focus on Accuracy" component and are addressed incidentally through the Oral Skills" and "Reading and Writing Skills" components. The course text will be used regularly in the "Accuracy Component" and as a reference for students during the other components of the curriculum.

Students in the intermediate Spanish program should expect to spend an additional 2-4 hours per day outside class to complete homework assignments and prepare for the next day's class. During the winter session, classes are 4 hours and 15 minutes each day, from 9:00AM until 11:45AM, and resuming after lunch from 1:00PM until 2:30PM.The program comprises a total of 60 hours of instruction, equaling 4 semester units of undergraduate credit.

Textbooks

We highly recommend that you order your texts online through the vendor of your choice before the WILP session begins. The session is very short, and if you wait to purchase your books until the session begins, they may not arrive in time. If you are unsure of your level, please use your score from the diagnostic test as a guide. Or, you may want to purchase both books and send one back after the session begins.
