Students are considered Native Speakers of English if they have attended both high school and college in the United States. All other students fall under non native speakers of English (see below) and must take a TOEFL or IELTS exam for admission.
All MA programs (except the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages program for native speakers of English) require that students work an advanced level in a second language.
*Students admitted to the undergraduate program or to the MAIPS, MPA, MAIEP, MAITP or Two-Year MBA program must be prepared to work at a minimum third-year university level in their language of study. Advanced Entry programs usually require a higher level of language proficiency (4th year equivalent). Those testing below that level will require additional study to complete their degree.
* To help evaluate language skills (other than English or Arabic), students may download a Diagnostic Language Test. The test is self-administered and will indicate whether the student has the required level of language proficiency. Because only advanced courses in language are offered during the academic year, students who do not achieve the minimum level should strongly consider beginning their studies by enrolling in the Institute’s Intensive Language Program in order to bring their language up to the appropriate level.
* The MA programs in Teaching Foreign Language and all programs in the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation require that students demonstrate a high proficiency (4th year +) in English and in one other language prior to admission.
Non-native speakers of English study English as their foreign language. All Non-native speakers of English are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores during the admissions process. Admission to the Two-Year MBA and any MAIPS Degree Programs require a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper) or 213 (computer) or an overall IELTS of 6.5 on the Academic module with no sub score below a 6.0, is required. Admission to the MATESOL, MATFL, MATI or Advanced Entry MBA programs require a minimum TOEFL of 600 (paper) or 250 (computer) or an overall IELTS of 7.0 on the Academic scale with no sub score below a 6.5.
Students will be assessed at New Student Orientation to determine the number of credits required and the appropriate level of further English study. In some cases, students will be waived from further English study and will replace English credits with electives.
Students with a 620 TOEFL (270 computer) are granted a waiver of the English requirement; they may choose to study a third language at the Institute. Students wishing to pursue a third language must arrange for a Language Proficiency Exam in that language prior to enrolling in courses.
Assessing Your Language Skills All students (Excep Non-Native Speakers of English with TOEFL scores over 620 (270)) take Language Placement Tests during New Student Orientation, just before starting classes. Tests have a written and oral component and determine the level that students will take to fulfill degree requirements.Self-administered diagnostic tests are available for download in: Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Russian or Spanish. After completing and grading the test you will have an indication if you are ready to take classes at the third-year college level. Questions about the tests or about proficiency should be directed to The Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics at 831-647-4115 or angela.quesenberry@miis.edu.Native English speakers who have recently had two years of college-level foreign language or the equivalent experience are probably ready to begin their language study at the third-year college level at MIIS.TOEFL or IELTS scores are used to assess initial levels of non-native English speakers. Depending upon the total scores and sub scores, students may be required or recommended to attend our summer or academic year English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) program before enrolling in the MIIS programs. How to Meet Minimum Language RequirementsNative English speakers may enroll in the "Plus" Programs which requires enrolling in our Summer Intensive Language Program before enrolling in the MBA or IPS programs. Some Students may achieve the 300 level in one summer, but most will need to take a bridge course, in fall and possibly the WINTER interim course, and even further study to qualify for 300 level courses.
Non-native speakers of English may enroll in English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) Program before enrolling in the MBA program.
