Degree Specific Requirements

MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

MATESOL students do not have a language requirement for admissions to, or graduation from, the MATESOL program of study.

MA in Teaching a Foreign Language

Native Speakers of the Teaching Language

Native speakers of the teaching language should consult with their academic advisor about ideal courses in, or about their language.  They will take the Pedagogical Grammar for Teaching Foreign Language and may also take a specialized course in the language about teaching or structure of that language (especially Korean, Arabic).  400 level courses in language are available as electives, but native speakers may choose to substitute other electives if these courses do not add to their teaching repertoire. Teachers of French, Italian, Spanish and Russian may want to consider taking one or more pedagogy courses in the summer at Middlebury College.

Non-native Speakers of the Teaching Language

Depending on the level of their teaching language, non-native speakers of the target language may either take the Pedagogical Grammar for Teaching Foreign language plus 8 units of relevant language courses or they may take all 12 units in the teaching language. This must be decided with the language program head.  For several of the languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, and Russian, we recommend doing some of the language requirement at Middlebury College’s summer language program, where there are usually several pedagogy courses in those languages in the summer.  Teachers may also want to take business language courses or others that aid them in broadening their language focus.

The Monterey Institute will accept 4 units of transfer credit for relevant 400 level courses at other universities, taken during the program.  For additional information on transfer credit from Middlebury College, contact the GSLEL Dean at rlarimer@miis.edu.

Evaluation of Language Skills

To help evaluate language skills (other than English), students may download a Diagnostic Language Test.

The test is self-administered and will indicate whether the student has the required level of language proficiency. Because only advanced courses in language are offered during the academic year, students who do not achieve the minimum level should strongly consider beginning their studies by enrolling in the Institute’s Intensive Language Program in order to bring their language up to the appropriate level.
