Language Teaching Degrees & Certificates

Master's Degrees

Students may pursue one of three master’s degrees, usually completed in three to four academic semesters.

These degrees combine strong academic preparation with practical training in language pedagogy theory and practice (methods, curriculum design, testing), applied linguistics (sociolinguistics, second language acquisition), and research design for behavioral scientists.

Certificate Programs

The professional certificate programs are available to both current MATESOL or MATFL students seeking to attain additional training in one of the content areas and to language teaching professionals seeking additional training or certification. The following certificates are available:

The LPA certificate program prepares students to administer language programs or schools. The CALL certificate program enables graduates to manage and develop curriculum for language learning programs utilizing computer technology. The TESOL and TFL certificate programs prepare individuals to pursue entry-level teaching positions.

Intensive English Programs

There are a variety of ways to study English at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. We offer non-degree English programs that help students learn English for school, business, and everyday life. Whether you are a tourist looking to build your English skills to travel in the United States, a college student preparing to transfer to an American community college or university, a prospective graduate student seeking to improve your academic skills, or a professional in need of specialized language training, we have a program that is right for you.

Intensive Foreign Language Programs

Foreign language study plays an important role at the Monterey Institute and, in addition to requiring language study of students in our graduate degree programs, we are committed to making language accessible to students not currently matriculated at the Monterey Institute. To accommodate different language training and scheduling needs, we offer intensive programs in the summer and in the winter, as well as customized training options throughout the year.
