My Institute Experience
Picture of Akihiko Sasaki
I was greatly affected by the faculty members’ devoted attitudes in teaching. Regardless of their hectic schedule, they diligently cared about each student’s learning throughout the program. I appreciate not only the subject matter they taught, but also the real professionalism as teachers they demonstrated. I realized, when I returned to Japan, that this attitude is the crucial factor to be a good teacher at elementary and secondary school level. It surely contributes to my current career.

Intensive English Programs

Intensive English as a Second Language (ESL)

Our ESL program places students in beginning to advanced levels. Students can attend one or more sessions, for up to one year. Lower division students develop their language skills for conversation and daily life. Upper division students choose specialized courses that focus on English for academic and professional purposes. No TOEFL score is required for admission.

English Preparation for Graduate Studies (EPGS)

This program is offered once a year each summer. Designed for students who have been admitted to a Monterey Institute MA program in international policy, international business or language teaching, this program focuses on the academic English skills necessary to succeed in graduate school. The program also provides international students some hands-on skills for living and studying in Monterey.

English Preparation for Translation and Interpretation (EPTI)

This program is offered once a year each summer. Designed for students who have been admitted to the Monterey Institute's MA in Translation, Interpretation & Localization Management program, this program focuses on high-level English, specifically for translators and interpreters. Qualified professional translators and interpreters may also participate to brush up on their skills.  In order to be admitted, students must have a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100 (or 600 PBT).

Custom Language Services (CLS)

Our most flexible option, Custom Language Services can arrange an individualized program of English study, focused on your specific needs.  Programs can be arranged for any level (beginners through advanced), for any length of time (minimum 60 hours), and can start at any time of year.  Corporate visitors, government officials, tourists, and local students are all welcome.  No TOEFL score is required.
