My Institute Experience

Everything is practical and integrative here at the Monterey Institute. The interactions that I had with other students, the discussions that I had with teachers and students have always given me new insights and perspectives into how we can teach language. Every course, every project, every discussion, and every interaction with the faculty challenged me to go beyond what I had done before. Not only did I expand my repertoire as a language teacher but I also became prepared to contribute to the teaching profession. I wholeheartedly appreciate the great faculty members for their encouragement, support, and resourcefulness. They are my great models.

KANDA GAIGO UNIVERSITY JOINT PROGRAM


Students with teachers on a trip to San Francisco. In collaboration with Kanda Gaigo University in Tokyo, Japan, the Monterey Institute has been offering a 4-week intensive English program focused on community interaction and American culture studies. Students in the program have opportunities for interaction with members of the local Monterey community through presentations they give at local schools, as well as through countless interaction opportunities set up as part of their classes.

Course Descriptions

Getting to Know US Culture
You will be introduced to integral aspects of culture and will evaluate similarities and differences between US and Japanese culture. Topics will be centered around weekly themes that will also tie in with The American Perspective. 

Exploration
You will learn about different ways to investigate culture. Investigative methods covered will be research, observations, approaching/contacting people (to make appointments), interviewing (design and techniques), questionnaires, etc.

The American Perspective
You will prepare for, participate in and reflect on information gained from panel discussions on topics covered in Get to Know US Culture class.

Community Interaction
You will further explore the cultural aspects discussed in Get to Know US Culture and The American Perspective through the investigative techniques discussed in Exploration class. You will choose an aspect of American culture or society to investigate and will employ a variety of research techniques to gather information that you will compile and then share in the format of a final presentation.
