The MATESOL degree program is 37 units and can be completed in three to four academic semesters with the typical course load of 12-13 credits/semester. Students may also elect to pursue one of the certificate options in conjunction with their MATESOL coursework: Language Program Administration (LPA), Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) or Teaching Foreign Language (TFL).
Two courses unique to the MATESOL program are Structure of English and Applied Linguistic Research. The Structure of English seminar examines the grammar of spoken and written English, focusing on how English grammar functions in authentic discourse. Applied Linguistic Research requires students to complete original research on a topic of their choice, related to their studies.
The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages exemplifies the typical course load and order of courses for a student studying in the MA program. Semester unit values are given in parentheses after each course.
