The Monterey Institute and Middlebury Language Schools have created a Monterey Option for the Master of Arts in Chinese. This new master’s degree, granted by Middlebury College, focuses on teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Students can complete their degree studying four summers at the Middlebury Language Schools or by studying two summers at Middlebury, with one academic year of study at the Monterey Institute in between the summer sessions.

During the summers at Middlebury, students will take courses about language pedagogy, linguistics and culture. All courses at Middlebury's Chinese School will be taught in Chinese. During the academic year in Monterey, students will enroll in educational linguistics courses, taught in English and Chinese. They will also have the possibility of undertaking a professional internship, such as teaching Chinese or assisting the Chinese language program with curriculum development or research projects. Later, in the second summer at Middlebury, students are required to take a teaching practicum.
Monterey Option students enroll in 9 - 10 units of coursework per semester, during the Fall and Spring term while at the Monterey Institute. Students work individually with the Dean of the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics to determine a study plan, according to the guidelines set for the program. Other courses from the educational linguistics program may be taken by participants with the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics and the Director of the Chinese School. Course offerings include: Computer-Assisted Language Learning Pedagogy, Online and Distance Education, Language Teacher Education, Language Teacher Supervision, Teaching of Reading, and Teaching of Writing.
Monterey Option participants must first be admitted to Middlebury's Chinese School. Following their acceptance by Middlebury, applicants will be required to submit an application to the Monterey Institute to be admitted to the Monterey Option. Applicants must meet application standards for both institutions to be admitted to the Monterey Option.
Middlebury Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree with a major in Chinese language (or relevant field) or course work equivalent to a major in Chinese language, and the ability to demonstrate high level of proficiency in the language. The GRE is not required. For non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL score of 600 is required. For non-native speakers of Chinese, a college major in Chinese or a minimum OPI score of Intermediate High is required. Preference will be given to applicants with a higher score. Applicants can fulfill the requirement by: 1) submitting an official OPI score from ACTFL or 2) taking our online computer adaptive exam with a follow up speaking test with a Chinese School faculty member.
Monterey Institute Requirements:
US bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited college/university with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Non-native speakers of English must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. The TOEFL minimums are 600 (paper), 250 (computer), 100 (internet), and IELTS minimums are 7.0 overall score, 7.0 on listening and reading sub-scores and no subscore below 6.5 on the Academic module. Non-native speakers of Chinese must demonstrate a high proficiency in Chinese language (4th year college-level or higher).
Monterey Option applicants must notify the Middlebury Chinese School of their intent to apply to the program on Middlebury's Language Schools application form. Applicants must be admitted by Middlebury College, and then submit an application and support documents to the Monterey Institute. Learn more about the Monterey Institute's application process.
The Monterey Institute application includes the following:
1. Fill out the application form completely. Please use the following Application Form for the Monterey Option
2. Write a Statement of Purpose (600 words or fewer)
3. Submit Your Resume or Curriculum Vitae
4. Submit Transcripts from higher education
5. Submit Two Letters of Recommendation
6. Submit a 2-3 page writing sample in Chinese on any topic
7. Submit Tests Required. The GRE general test may be submitted. TOEFL or IELTS is required for non-native speakers of English.
8. Submit the completed application to the Admissions Office
**Any application materials submitted to the Middlebury Language Schools may be forwarded to the Monterey Institute for use with application to the Monterey Option.
Participants in the Monterey Option will be granted a tuition discount on their studies at the Monterey Institute for up to 20 units of coursework during the Fall and Spring semesters. Any additional courses taken, exceeding the 20 units, will be charged full tuition costs. The tuition rate will be equal to $750 per unit of study at Monterey Institute for the 2009-2010 academic year.
