My Institute Experience

One great thing about the Monterey Institute is that you are constantly challenged to reexamine your beliefs about language learning and teaching. In doing so, you come to your own conclusions and are thus well prepared to act independently once you have left the institute.

Principles & Practices of Language Teaching (ED 440)

Interested in teaching a language? Want to learn how?

Enroll in our new online course in language teaching methodology. The course provides an overview of language teaching and learning principles, including: the Five Precepts of the Monterey Way; language learning strategies and styles; the teaching of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar; introduction to syllabus planning and design, the use of computers in language teaching, and language assessment.

Students will observe language classes (online!), share ideas and experiences with classmates, develop teaching materials, and participate in an online trade show, showcasing their newly gained knowledge through lessons and activities.

The course can be taken credit or non-credit, for professional development, continuing education, or for other accreditation or certification purposes.  Students who take the course for credit will earn 3 units of graduate credit which can be applied to the Monterey Institute’s Certificates in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or Teaching a Foreign Language (TFL) or for the master’s programs in TESOL or TFL, or transferred to other schools.

Next offering: June 23 - August 15, 2008
