Through the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (CAM) in-service language instructors from Spain will participate in teacher-training programs with the Monterey Institute in three locations this summer: Madrid, Spain; Monterey, California; and Burlington, Vermont.

- Writing and familiarity with different written genres in English
- Oral expression in English: public speaking, presentations, interactions in academic settings, debates, etc.
- English phonetics: pronunciation, intonation, variations within the English language
- Technological resources in English: designing materials with the computer, using the internet, etc.
- American Culture, using a sampling of different types of content: pragmatics, comedy, music, film and literature, politics, sports, etc.
- Art of teaching languages: application of concepts related to language acquisition, designing and developing activities, curricular planning
- Bilingualism: approaches to bilingual teaching
- Linguistic strategies in English for teaching and classroom management

* American style lunch will be held each day in the lunch room and is part of the immersion program.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in cultural and social activities whose objectives are academic. These activities are expected to accelerate the participants' learning process and strengthen their progress in the three areas of the program: language, culture, and bilingual education.
The activities are an integral part of the academic program; they complement and enrich the content of the classes, and become part of the students' portfolio. Complete immersion cannot be achieved without the students' participation in the program's cultural and social activities.
Phoebe Knowles
MA Spanish, Middlebury College
Phoebe, TEFL certified, holds an MA in Spanish from Middlebury College in Madrid and a BA in Hispanic Studies from Brown University. Previously, she taught high school Spanish at Loomis Chaffee School and business Spanish for professionals within the tourism field in New York City. As an Auxiliar de Conversación living in Spain, she worked with teachers in the Community of Madrid’s bilingual public elementary schools, teaching them English, helping them develop lesson plans, materials and resources and assisting them in their classrooms.
Greer Murphy
MATESOL, Monterey Institute of Interntational Studies
Greer, MATESOL, also holds a BS in International Politics from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Prior to joining the Institute, Greer spent a year tutoring English in Madrid and studying at the Universidad Complutense. She also spent a year as an Auxiliar de Conversación in the Bilingual Education Project, where responsibilities included English language lesson planning and curriculum/materials development.
