In-service elementary and secondary teachers from the Gyeonggi Province of Korea will participate in a one-month course at the Monterey Institute as part of their training program at Sookmyung Women's University. The course includes advanced study of English language and culture and special training in the principles and practices of language teaching.
Program Dates: July 25, 2008 - August 21, 2008

Program Content
- American cultural themes based on unique cultural aspects of American life, with emphasis on teaching appropriate use of English
- Material development, resource collection, and useful ideas for enhancing language learning with technology, books, games, music, pictures, etc.
- Activities and discussions focused on material collection and design, lesson planning and curriculum development that participants will be able to implement into their teaching and continue to develop
- Professional development and training through peer observations and coaching, providing feedback, model lessons, and self-diagnosis
- Honing classroom oral expression and pronunciation skills through interaction, oral presentation, and micro-teaching
- Strategies for engaging learners in the foreign language classroom

Peter Shaw

Dr. Shaw specializes in language teaching pedagogy; critical pedagogy; co-operative learning; curriculum theory; content-based instruction; portfolios and authentic assessment; and discourse analysis and EAP.
Kathleen M. Bailey
PhD, Applied Linguistics; MATESOL, University of California, Los Angeles
Dr. Bailey specializes in educational research, assessment, teacher education, language program administration, and language teacher supervision.
Leo van Lier
PhD, Linguistics; MA, Linguistics for Language Teaching, University of Lancaster, England
Dr. van Lier specializes in educational linguistics; second language acquisition; pedagogical grammar; computer-assisted instruction; discourse analysis; and bilingual education.
Rebecca Cheney
MATESOL, Monterey Institute of International Studies
Rebecca, MATESOL and Language Program Administration Certificate, also holds a BA in International Studies from Utah State University. Rebecca has trained in-service and pre-service teachers in Brazil and the US in a religious setting. She has taught and tutored in various English programs in Monterey and in Taiwan. In addition, she taught in public schools and in a Blind Preschool in the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind. Experienced in multi-lingual editing and publishing, Rebecca works as an assistant to the editor of the Modern Language Journal.
Nicole Doty
MATESOL, Monterey Institute of International Studies
Nicole, MATESOL, attained her bachelor's degree in International Cultural Studies and Anthropology from Brigham Young University-Hawaii. She has been teaching English as a second language for over three years and currently works in the English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) program at the Monterey Institute. Last fall Nicole traveled to Cairo, Egypt where she delivered a content-based kindergarten curriculum that she developed with colleague Jenny Cogswell. She also taught a teacher education workshop for the native English speaking teachers, the Egyptian teaching assistants, and the primary school administrator.
Mica Tucci
MATESOL candidate, Monterey Institute of International Studies
Mica is pursuing her MATESOL and a Certificate in Language Program Administration as part of the Peace Corps Master's International program at the Monterey Institute. She holds a BA in Anthropology from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, where she tutored local elementary and middle school students in all subjects. She later worked as an AmeriCorps member to coordinate cultural and environmental service-learning projects for Lawrence University students in K-12 classrooms. Previously, Mica worked at a study abroad center in San José, Costa Rica, where she directed community service activities and cultural excursions for Spanish language students.
Jenny Cogswell
MATESOL, Monterey Institute of International Studies
Jenny, MATESOL, holds a BA in Italian Literature and Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles. During her undergraduate studies, she spent a year studying at the University of Bologna, Italy while tutoring English to adults and working as a teaching assistant to public elementary and middle school teachers. She has experience as a consultant on English language assessment projects, and, as part of the teaching faculty for the Intensive English as a Second Language Program at the Monterey institute, she currently develops lesson plans, curricula, and materials for an English integrated skills theme based course on cooking.
Jeremy Robinson
MATFL-Spanish candidate, Monterey Institute of International Studies
Jeremy, MA in Teaching a Foreign Language- Spanish candidate, holds a BA in International Cultural Studies along with a Spanish Minor from Brigham Young University-Hawaii. He completed an Advanced Spanish Language Certificate at La Universidad de Alcala, holds a TEFL Certificate and taught English in the ZheJiang Provence of China. He is enrolled in the Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Certificate at the Monterey Institute and will be co-teaching the CALL and Pedagogy class in the Fall semester. Jeremy works in the Teaching and Learning Collaborative at the Monterey Institute where he supports innovative teaching ideas and instructs professors, staff, and students in using technology effectively in their classes and workplace. He also conducts CALL teacher trainer workshops in the Monterey area.
